No matter where you are in the world, if you have the shopping bug you have no doubt harbored a secret dream of going to Bangkok. The stories of multi-level Bangkok shopping centers and buzzing night markets and every other shopping venue possible in a major city would excite anyone who has shopping in their blood. The capital of Thailand is shopping heaven if that is your passion or your hobby.
Out of all the many millions who visit Bangkok, Thailand, every year it is estimated that a major portion of them will spend some interesting time in either the cheapest, the biggest or the best shopping mall in Bangkok. The thing is, there are just so many Bangkok shopping centers to choose from, either in the center of the city, along the public transportation routes such as the BTS Skytrain and MRT Subway, or on the banks of the mighty Chao Phraya River, which is where the new Icon Siam Bangkok is located.
It is actually difficult to know where to start your shopping adventure. However, we would like to help you decide for yourself what the best shopping mall in Bangkok is and where it is and the fastest and easiest way to get there from VIE Hotel Bangkok.
It is a sure bet that among the sprawling and bustling night markets, such as the Chatuchak Weekend Market, or the Ratchada Train Market, you will find the trendy fashions you crave and the souvenirs you need to take back home. And it is also nearly guaranteed that in the glamorous Bangkok shopping centers you will find the brand names you are looking for and the deals you dream about. You can also spend a day there in restaurants and entertainment, which are amply provided.
Coming up the long strip of Thailand’s longest road, Sukhumvit Road, you are going to begin encountering a number of these mega malls already. The major Bangkok shopping centers have already begun from there. Down at Sukhumvit 24 and nearby you have entered the high-end Em district, with such playgrounds for the well-to-do as Emporium and EmQuartier.
By the time you get to the Siam area, a mere ten minutes’ walk from VIE Hotel Bangkok, you are in the heart of the city’s commercial district and Bangkok shopping centers abound. Names like Paragon, which houses the incredible Bangkok Sea Life, Siam Discovery or the inimitable palace of bargains MBK Centre, are virtually world famous as far as true shopaholics are concerned.
However, as you leave the Siam area and take the Skytrain to Silom, which is where you will find the singular Patpong Night Market (grown up as it were in the midst of the old red light district of the city), and continue on to the Chao Phraya River, some great surprises are in store for you. From Asiatique The Riverfront to Icon Siam Bangkok, the riverside holds some of the most attractive shopping in Bangkok and the best shopping mall in Bangkok.
Icon Siam Bangkok is the new shopping center in the paradise of malls which is Thailand’s capital.
The tall tower of glass which is Icon Siam Bangkok is a picturesque sight of modern architecture, projecting from the west bank and standing motionless, blue and beautiful against the incessant current of the Chao Phraya River.
This tower is an incredible collection of shops, restaurants and other fascinating venues which are all more than enough to spend the day there or the evening in shopping mall bliss. They are actually compiled in two wings or two shopping malls, in a sense, IconSiam and IconLuxe.
Beginning on the ground floor is a journey through the amazing handicrafts of Thailand. Many of these are created by hill tribes through the royal projects of the country. And it even, believe it or not, houses its own floating market, called SOOK Siam. This, combined with the wondrously colorful water fountain outside, are real treats during the New Year countdown.
Some firsts will be encountered here. The mall includes the very first Siam Takashimaya department store in the country of Thailand. It also houses the first Apple Store in Thailand. If this is not enough, and it shouldn’t be because there is plenty more, you will also find premium supermarket Dear Tummy here.
Along with the usual cinema (which no Thai shopping mall can respectably do without), there is also a fitness club and even a museum. The Iconsiam Heritage Museum (River Museum Bangkok), which is associated with the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture of Thailand, is a pleasant place to take an edifying break from your shopping.
If you ever need a permanent residence in Thailand’s capital, the best shopping mall in Bangkok just might be the place for you. Not one but two luxury residences are located within the immediate vicinity as well as all the shops and many different restaurants. And these are very good name places indeed. The larger one is the Magnolia Waterfront Residences. The second is the illustrious The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, of course associated with the famous Mandarin Oriental Hotel which is not too far down the river.
Shoppers and sightseers will find several methods of how to go to Icon Siam, as it is called for short. While the easiest is always a taxi, this could be a long and wandering way. One way, which will take you almost directly from VIE Hotel Bangkok, is by getting on the BTS Skytrain which nearly right outside the hotel. You can ride this all the way to the river (though you have to change trains at Siam station). From there you can take a ferry upriver to the mall. It should be easy as not only your concierge but others you meet along the way will know how to go to Icon Siam. The bus is another means of how to go to Icon Siam, but we prefer the Skytrain and the scenic ride on the river which follows.
VIE Hotel Bangkok, of the MGallery Hotel Collection, is a shopper’s choice of accommodations. The modern and elegant style, very impressive as you enter the gleaming lobby in white, bronze and crystal, is inspiring with a feeling of freedom and joy that will motivate you for your trip to Icon Siam.
Of course the incredible location of the hotel is another gift from heaven to the shopper’s heart. In the direct center of the commercial district of Bangkok, staying at this hotel puts you within easy access to all the best shopping in the entire city. If you prefer to walk, the great deals of Pratunam are one direction and only ten or so minutes away, and the joys of the Siam area are another direction and another mere ten minutes away. Naturally, however, while the weather is warming up, you will enjoy the cool ride on the BTS Skytrain which will take you directly to the Siam station in only one stop!
From there, you disembark from the train, but embark on a shopping adventure which here in Bangkok you will get your fill of like nowhere else.
